You're wandering without a map. A sitemap is a file that tells search engines about every public page on your site — its URL, when it was last updated, and how important it is.

Why This Matters

Without a sitemap, search engines must discover your pages by following links. This means:

  • New pages take longer to get indexed — crawlers may not find them for weeks
  • Deep pages may never be found — if they're more than 3 clicks from your homepage
  • Orphan pages are invisible — pages without internal links are essentially hidden
  • Content changes aren't detected quickly — updated posts may not be re-crawled promptly

Sitemaps don't guarantee better rankings, but they ensure search engines know your content exists.

How to Fix It

Method 1: WordPress Built-in Sitemap (5.5+)

WordPress 5.5+ generates a basic sitemap automatically at:

yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml

If this URL works, you already have a sitemap. However, WordPress's built-in sitemap is basic — it doesn't offer customization or exclusions.

Method 2: SEO Plugin Sitemap (Recommended)

If you have an SEO plugin, use its sitemap:

  • Yoast SEO → SEO → General → Features → XML sitemaps → yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml
  • Rank Math → Sitemap Settings → yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml
  • SEOPress → XML & HTML Sitemap → yourdomain.com/sitemaps.xml

SEO plugin sitemaps are smarter:

  • Exclude noindex pages
  • Include image information
  • Update automatically when content changes
  • Let you exclude specific pages/posts

Method 3: Dedicated Sitemap Plugin

If you don't use an SEO plugin:

  • XML Sitemap & Google News — lightweight, focused
  • Google XML Sitemaps — classic, reliable

Step 2: Submit to Google

  1. Go to Google Search Console
  2. Select your property
  3. Navigate to Sitemaps in the left sidebar
  4. Enter your sitemap URL and click Submit

Step 3: Submit to Bing

  1. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools
  2. Navigate to Sitemaps
  3. Submit your sitemap URL

What to Watch For

  • Don't have multiple sitemaps from different sources. If WordPress built-in AND your SEO plugin both generate sitemaps, disable the one you're not using.
  • Keep your sitemap under 50,000 URLs. For large sites, SEO plugins automatically split into multiple sitemaps.
  • Sitemaps should only contain pages you want indexed. Exclude admin pages, tag archives (if thin), and any noindex pages.
