Double tracking! Multiple analytics scripts running simultaneously inflate your visitor count, deflate your bounce rate, and add unnecessary page weight.
Why This Matters
When two analytics scripts track the same visitor:
- Pageviews are counted twice — your stats show double the actual traffic
- Bounce rate plummets artificially — two "hits" per page means Google thinks every visit has multiple interactions
- Page speed drops — each tracking script adds 20–50KB and external requests to Google/Facebook servers
- Data is unreliable — you can't make business decisions from inflated numbers
Common Duplication Patterns
| Source 1 | Source 2 | How It Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Theme's built-in GA field | MonsterInsights/Site Kit plugin | Theme and plugin both inject the tracking code |
Manual <head> code |
SEO plugin analytics | Pasted code in header + plugin both load GA |
| Google Site Kit | Jetpack Stats | Both add their own tracking |
| Header/footer script plugin | Theme customizer | Same code added in two places |
How to Find Duplicates
- Open your site → Right-click → View Page Source
- Search (Ctrl+F) for
gtagorgoogle-analyticsoranalytics.jsorGA-orG- - Count the occurrences — you should see your tracking ID once
Check for Facebook Pixel Duplicates Too
Search for fbq or facebook.com/tr — same principle applies.
How to Fix It
Step 1: Choose One Method
Pick one way to add analytics:
- Plugin (recommended): Google Site Kit, MonsterInsights, or your SEO plugin's built-in analytics
- Manual code: Paste the tracking code in one place only
Step 2: Remove all Other Instances
- Theme settings: Check Customize → look for "Analytics" or "Tracking Code" fields → clear them
- Header/Footer plugins: Check plugins like "Insert Headers and Footers" → remove analytics code
- SEO plugin settings: Yoast → General → Webmaster Tools, Rank Math → General Settings → Analytics
- functions.php: Check for manually added tracking code
- Child theme header.php: Check for hard-coded scripts
Step 3: Verify
After cleanup, view your page source again and confirm only one tracking script exists.
What to Watch For
- After removing duplicates, your reported traffic will drop (to the real number). This is correct — your previous data was inflated.
- Google Tag Manager is different from Google Analytics. GTM loads GA inside it. If you use GTM, don't also load GA separately.
- If you use a consent management plugin (GDPR), make sure it controls all analytics — not just the ones it knows about.
