The invisible cape is on — your site is telling every search engine to ignore it. This is the #1 reason new WordPress sites don't appear in Google.
Why This Matters
WordPress has a setting called "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" under Settings → Reading. When checked, it adds a noindex meta tag to every page, telling Google, Bing, and other search engines:
"Please do not index any page on this site."
Search engines respect this directive. Your site effectively becomes invisible to search traffic.
This setting is commonly turned on during development (to prevent indexing of an unfinished site) and then forgotten when the site goes live.
How to Fix It
- Go to Settings → Reading in your WordPress admin
- Scroll to "Search engine visibility"
- Uncheck the box that says "Discourage search engines from indexing this site"
- Click Save Changes
That's it. Google will begin crawling and indexing your site within a few days.
Speed Up Re-Indexing
After unchecking the setting:
- Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console at
https://search.google.com/search-console - Go to Sitemaps → Add your sitemap URL (usually
yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) - Use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for your most important pages
What to Watch For
- It can take 1–4 weeks for Google to fully index your site after enabling visibility, depending on your content volume.
- Check for additional
noindextags from your SEO plugin — some plugins have their own indexing controls per page/post. - If you're using Cloudflare, make sure you're not accidentally blocking crawlers in your firewall rules.
- Some managed hosts also have a "maintenance mode" that blocks search engines separately from this WordPress setting.
