Jetpack is trying to do everything at once! It bundles SEO tools, performance features, security scanning, and more — but if you already have dedicated plugins for these, the overlapping features create conflicts and waste resources.

Why This Matters

Jetpack is a "Swiss Army knife" plugin that includes modules for:

  • SEO — meta tags, Open Graph, sitemaps
  • Performance — lazy loading, CDN, site accelerator
  • Security — brute force protection, downtime monitoring
  • Analytics — WordPress.com Stats

If you also run Yoast, WP Rocket, Wordfence, or Google Analytics — you have duplicate functionality running simultaneously. This wastes server resources and can cause data conflicts.

How to Fix It

Step 1: Identify Overlapping Modules

Go to Jetpack → Settings and review each tab:

Jetpack Module Overlaps With Action
SEO Tools Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress Turn OFF
Sitemaps Any SEO plugin Turn OFF
Site Accelerator (images) ShortPixel, Imagify, Smush Turn OFF
Site Accelerator (static files) WP Rocket, Autoptimize Turn OFF
Lazy Images Native WP lazy loading (5.5+) Turn OFF
Protect (brute force) Wordfence, Sucuri, iThemes Turn OFF
WordPress.com Stats Google Analytics, Matomo Consider turning OFF

Step 2: Disable Overlapping Modules

In Jetpack → Settings, go through each tab (Security, Performance, Writing, Sharing) and toggle off the modules that overlap with your dedicated plugins.

Step 3: Consider What You Actually Need From Jetpack

Common legitimate uses for Jetpack:

  • Backup (Jetpack VaultPress Backup) — if you don't have another backup solution
  • Social sharing — auto-posting to social media
  • Contact form — simple forms
  • Markdown — writing posts in Markdown

If you only use one or two Jetpack features, consider whether a standalone plugin for those features would be lighter.

What to Watch For

  • Jetpack Connection: Even with most modules disabled, Jetpack maintains a connection to WordPress.com. This adds overhead. If you're not using any Jetpack features, consider removing it entirely.
  • You can disable modules you can't find in settings via Jetpack → Debug or using the jetpack_active_modules filter.
  • After disabling modules, clear your caches and test your site.
